Case 003 — Observability Lag in Route Execution

Context

An automated navigation system plans and executes routes based on periodically updated traffic and infrastructure data.

The system continuously calculates optimal paths and provides guidance based on the latest available information.

Situation

A vehicle is executing a planned route using the current navigation model.

Ahead on the route, a traffic accident blocks the road and authorities close the segment.

The closure information enters the traffic network but has not yet propagated to the navigation system used by the vehicle.

The system continues to guide the vehicle along the original route because, according to its current model of the road network, the route remains valid.

Boundary

The navigation system is functioning correctly according to the information available to it.

However, the real-world conditions required for the route to remain valid have already changed.

The system’s operational model of the environment is therefore no longer valid.

This condition represents an Applicability Boundary.

Key Insight

Applicability boundaries may arise when the system’s model of the environment lags behind real-world changes.

Even correct execution based on internally consistent data may produce operationally invalid outcomes when observability assumptions no longer hold.
